Most importantly, an enormous fire in Russey Keo district of Phnom Penh destroyed hundreds of homes, leaving thousands homeless. A pattern of slum fires on valuable developable land leads some to suspect that this was an intentional fire, but it’s simply not clear from where I sit (though I’m suspicious). One article claimed that the fire was started, intentionally, by an irate john pissed off about being robbed at a local brothel/massage parlor. Could be. But when events like this are quickly blamed on low-status women, I get suspicious (Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, anyone?). Jinja has a good take.
Pol Pot died ten years ago. KI-Media reprints some pictures from just before the end.
Andy Brouwer has a few excellent short pieces recently that seem ethnographic: one on Neak Ta, one on “Stone Buddhas,” and one on scarecrows. Great photos.
Finally, Vaughan over at Mind Hacks points out this hilarious, incomprehensible, eerily and presciently you-tube-style lecture by Jacques Lacan, available on (of course), youtube.
